Fall Vibookcrate Unboxing

asteriaiconHello lovelies! If you read my previous post about the summer book box that I purchased from @vibookcrate, you will know that I also purchased the fall box as well. I was very excited to receive this since A) who doesn’t love book mail, am I right? And B) I love love love fall! I come alive in the fall time! So combining the two just seems magical and wonderful! So today, I thought I would share my unboxing of the Fall book box, and my opinion on it all.

**Please note that this is my own personal opinion on this product. I was in no way sponsored to do this. This is just one book lover’s honest opinion.**

As mentioned before, I really wanted to choose a company that shipped within Canada. It was very important to me to support a Canadian business, and this particular company chooses products for the box that are made by Canadian companies, so it’s a double win! It also does not hurt that it ends up being cheaper for me to order from a Canadian company than purchase a box from a company that ships to Canada, but is located elsewhere. By the time you pay the shipping costs and covert to Canadian funds, it can be grossly expensive!

When opening the lovely little box, this is all you see. I love the cozy look of the socks and tea cup. It just feels like comfort and warmth, very hygge*! I love this part of the unboxing!

Once through the carefully wrapped tissue paper, this is all you see. You really get no hint at all, it’s all little bits and pieces of colour and shapes.

Inside, there was a bag of tea made by Booksnleaf , and if you follow us on Instagram, you might recognize the packaging as this is the company that made my Harry Potter house themed tea. This particular tea was created specifically for this book box, which I think is a really wonderful touch!

There was also a cup cozy that was crocheted by Coastal Mist Creations, which was a nice colour and beautifully made. Another item was the Kiss Me! I’m Canadian lip balm by Shea Butter Market in a spicy cinnamon maple syrup flavour, which…really how do you get more Canadian than that?!

The moment we have all been waiting for…here are the books themselves! The adult fiction book was First Frost by Sarah Addison Allen and the YA selection was The Accident Season by Moïra Fowley-Doyle. I can say that I recognize First Frost, it has been on my radar for quite some time and sounds really interesting, but I have never heard of The Accident Season or the author.

There was also a lovely handmade book sleeve by @vibookcrate, and a bookmark by @bibliophile.belle.

To sum up the box itself, I found the overall feel to be very fall. Everything came together well and all of the products went along with the fall theme. The packaging was lovely and carefully put together. The books both sound very interesting and fit with the whole feel of it all.

My personal opinion on this box…I have struggled with. For me personally, it was just okay. I love that the tea was created for this box specifically, but for me I am finding that black tea is not really my favourite. I was excited to try the lip balm, but found it bothered my lips. I loved the little cup cozy, but as a crocheter, it is something I can do, and I don’t know how much use I am going to get out of it. I love the book sleeve and think they are great ideas to have for someone who travels with their books, but I don’t normally take my books anywhere so I don’t know how much use I am going to get out of this either. I am excited to try The Accident Season and enjoyed getting a book that I had not heard of before. I am somewhat excited and somewhat disappointed with First Frost. As I said, this is a book that has been on my radar and I do want to read, but I also know that it is book 2 in a series, so I have to track down the 1st book to read first before starting this. My meh feeling about the box is not a reflection of the box itself. I think it all came together beautifully and I can see the appeal that every single item had for the box. I can very clearly see all of the care and consideration that went into the whole package and it is very much appreciated. For me personally, it just fell a little short of my hopes.

I have not decided yet whether I am going to try the Winter themed book box, or hold out for another company that may be putting together a specifically Christmas box. Christmas is definitely more my jam over a winter theme, but we will see.

*Editor Note: (Cause I had to ask too) From Wikiedia – “Hygge (/ˈhjuːɡə/ HEW-gə or /ˈhɡə/ HOO-gə) is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment.”

VIBOOKCRATE Unboxing

asteriaiconI am so so so late in posting this, and I am so sorry!!!  I am finally getting the summer @VIBOOKCRATE unboxing posted right before the fall box is released!!

I really enjoyed the book box I had received at Christmas time last year, but unfortunately the owner of the business had shut down. I have been looking for another book box to give a try since, and happened to stumble on this on Instagram one day. I particularly wanted a company that shipped within Canada specifically, mainly because the cost of shipping from the US is so high, and by the time you do the dollar exchange, it becomes crazy expensive, and ultimately not worth the value. Please note, I in no way was endorsed to review this box, it is simply one book lover’s opinion on something I wanted to try!

VIBookcrate has 2 separate boxes that she sells. There is a monthly subscription box you can get for kids aged 8-12, as well as a seasonal box for adults that contain one adult fiction book and one YA fiction book. The boxes are carefully cultivated with a few items to match the overall theme of the book/season. I decided to try the summer seasonal box after I saw a spoiler or two on Instagram.

I received a very simple white box; very clean, very mysterious! The first thing you see when the box is opened is the nice summery yellow tissue paper, and a guide to the box with the theme of “Summer Days and Summer Nights”.

The books themselves seem very interesting (I admit I have not gotten a chance to read them just yet). The adult fiction book is The Book of Lost and Found by Lucy Foley, and the YA novel is a collection of short stories called Summer Days and Summer Nights by a variety of authors, many very well known.

There was quite a bit of fun things to go along with the books in the box, and they were very well thought out! There was a lovely tote bag, a beautiful “currently reading” bookmark that is Instagram worthy, a yummy smelling toasted marshmallow candle, some water flavouring crystals in strawberry lemonade flavour, and a beautiful little vial of sand from Tofino.

After trying the delicious water flavouring powders, I actually ended up buying a HUGE box from the company. They are so yummy, are convenient to carry around, and come in a ton of flavours!

I have to admit it was the candle that persuaded me to buy the box …who doesn’t love toasted marshmallow!! It is a beautiful little candle and smells divine! My favourite thing in the box though was the little vial of sand from Tofino, British Columbia. It was such a nice and unique touch. I have never been to B.C. before, and would love to go one day, and it definitely fit into the whole beach/summer theme! I think I am going to end up stealing this idea, and collect little vials of sand from places I travel to, I just found it such a lovely idea!!

Everything was well thought out, the products are usable items that fit within the summer theme, and the books look like very interesting reads. This was an amazing box; I am in love with everything in it, and have already bought a fall box haha! They are definitely worth the price!! Go check out VIBOOKCRATE on Instagram or Facebook to see some great photos of books and book box content. If you are interested in purchasing a box, I was even able to find promo codes from their book box reps on Instagram to save 10%.

Our first Unboxing!

asteriaiconHave any of you ever bought or received one of those subscription boxes in the mail? I first heard about these by a co-worker about 4 years ago. He told me about this box he received monthly that contained a t-shirt and some various items that pertained to that month’s particular theme. I was very intrigued. I thought it would be a great gift idea for my fiancé, so I looked into it. There are tons of different boxes you can purchase, pertaining to anything you can think of: beauty products, socks, alcohol and food, tea, chocolate, crafting, fashion, fitness, jewellery, home décor, books, even a box for pets! As I was looking into the idea of getting a geek box subscription, I noticed the price of shipping these types of boxes to Canada (if they shipped at all), and after doing some quick conversion math in my head from US$ to CDN$, I quickly realized it was just way too expensive to get one.

I gave up the idea for a very long time until very recently, when I was listening to a podcast about books. I did some googling and found a very handy blog post about various boxes that ship within Canada. There were a few different book boxes to choose from, and after careful consideration, I decided I would buy a 1 month box to Novel Editions. It seemed to have more of what I was looking for at a better cost, and I figured if I hated it, I was only out one month’s cost, rather than a full 6 or 12 month subscription. Then I decided to document the un-boxing for the blog! This is the box I received in the mail a few days ago. It comes in a nice sized box, with a beautiful logo on it.

As I opened the box, and took my time to take pictures, I got more and more excited!  The theme for the month of December is Magic! I had received an email about the theme before the box shipped, and I have been thinking about what type of book could be in the box. After all, the term “magic” in books can mean a number of things. Are we talking like witch magic? Or are we talking dragons and fantasy type magic? Would it be a Christmas magic story?

IMG_3819

I am not going to lie. I was like a little kid on Christmas morning opening this box. I took my time with each item, saving the book for last. Every part of this was just perfect, and it felt like this box was put together just for me!

IMG_3821

First I took out the fairy lights. I love fairy lights! There are a million uses for these, especially at Christmas time! Then I pulled out the lavender bath bomb, perfect for a nice relaxing bath with a book! I next pulled out a little tin, which turned out to be chocolate mint loose leaf tea, which smells heavenly! There was a small box in the one corner, which turned out to be a Christmas ornament! A Christmas ornament!!! It has ribbons of text from C.S.Lewis’s The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.

IMG_3825

Finally. The book. At first glance, the book has a stunning cover.  When reading the synopsis on the back, it sounds very interesting. The book follows two girls who photograph fairies in a garden, and become a national sensation.  It also looks 100 years later to a woman who find a manuscript in her grandfather`s bookstore, and learns about the little girls and the fairies. I also loved that the box included a little note from the author about where she got the idea for the story. It added a very nice touch. Also, Novel Editions has a book club where they discuss the book, and the author for this will be joining in to discuss with the readers, which I think is fabulous and I am really excited for it!!

IMG_3826

Overall, this was a fabulous experience. It was somewhat pricy, it cost me about $60CND, but the items inside plus the book definitely are worth more than that. And really, the excitement alone of opening the box and even talking about it with people, made it worth the money! Sadly, after I purchased the box I found out that Novel Editions will only be shipping only once more for the month of January, and then they are closing up shop. I have bought the January subscription though, so I will post pictures of that once I get it, as it is supposed to be very good, but I have to be honest it will be hard to top the December box!
